Worldwide, decisions are being made today that will shape our food system for decades to come. Even in Europe, new genetic engineering techniques are being deregulated and restrictive seed regulations threaten the vital work of small plant breeders and seed producers. At the same time, patents on plants and genetic traits continue to expand, whilst control over seeds is becoming concentrated in fewer and fewer hands. But whilst we are dependent on a food system that degrades ecosystems, erodes diversity and privatizes access to genetic resources, we must never forget that seeds are much more than agricultural inputs.
As the climate crisis accelerates, we need a wider range of locally adapted, resilient seeds than ever. We need plants that are capable of coping with droughts, floods, heat and new pests. Plants based on seeds that will not only feed, but holistically nourish us and future generations. Yet despite their vital importance, seeds have no voice of their own.
Some initiatives are already speaking up for them today.
But we need to be louder.
We call on individuals, communities, associations, institutions and businesses to give seeds a voice and thereby safeguard and develop food sovereignty and cultural heritage. We want to establish a global network that supports the right of seed exchange of farmers, gardeners, seed savers and plant breeders as well as the right to build and maintain community seedbanks.
Together, we can build a movement that accelerates the exchange of seed-related knowledge across generations and borders.
